Hot, sweaty and happy in the garden

The temp is only 80 here but I'm not used to the heat when I'm cutting back brush in the back yard, watering the front garden and sharing a few plants with a neighbors. ( 2 climbing roses and a fern)
I didn't get any painting done today but some of the yellow lilies started blooming and I hope to get to those tomorrow.

Change of plans

I went back out to get the last of the lilies I'd been painting but they were done. Last nights rain was enough to pound half the petals off them so I went for a walk in the back yard to see if there was anything I'd forgotten about. 

 There were just 2 of these and I don't think they'd be much fun to paint so I think I'll do a few pen and ink drawings. I'll post pictures when I finish them.

Asiatic Lily Project

 I was pleased with the way the painted lily looks and am looking forward to trying it again with the last 2 if these lilies in the garden.

I spent this morning painting in the dishes that I'll be painting more of my flowers on this season. I'm trying to give them some dimension without making them too big a part of the overall design-I want the flowers to be the stars here and don't want the dishes to compete with them. Balance is an important part of any painting-don't you think so?

Painting an Asiatic Lily, color placement

 The burgundy and pink go to the outside of the petals

 The orange and white go to the inside of the petals, a bit of light green at the center and a mix of brown and black for the spots. 

  Look at your flower, they're not dots. Take a deep breath and try to paint the actual shape of the marks. Use a VERY light touch and the smallest brush you can find. If you haven't got a brush for this part, use a toothpick.

 Use green for the leaves. Depending on the shade of green you've got you may want to add some white or yellow to it.

At this point I drop the real flower on the canvas panel next to the painted one to see how I'm doing before I add the centers  and decide what needs to be done to finish this.

I am working with acrylics (Liquitex) so the exact names of colors may be different with the brands and types of paints that you may be using but all you really need is a burgundy, orange, white, green, brown and black.

Asiatic Oops! Those Lilies are Peruvian

 Whatever you call them I enjoyed doing the pencil and ink drawings and finding fun ways to put them all together.

 It reminds me of the rose by any other name in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
